Driver goes WRONG WAY down M60 in 'extremely dangerous' police chase that 'could have been fatal'

A driver went the wrong way down the M60 in an attempt to evade police in an 'extremely dangerous' act that 'could have been fatal'.

Officers from the Tactical Vehicle Intercept Unit began following a car which was suspected to have been displaying cloned registration plates in the Stockport area at around 1.30pm on Monday (September 4).

During the pursuit, the car was then driven onto the M60 and failed to stop for officers, before it was driven the wrong way along the motorway as the driver tried to make an escape.

Specialist officers were able stop the Seat vehicle in order to 'prevent potentially serious harm to innocent members of the public' using the motorway at the time, police said.

An 18-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of burglary, theft of a motor vehicle, dangerous driving, possession of drugs and possession of an offensive weapon.

Another man, aged 24, was arrested on suspicion of burglary, theft of a motor vehicle, and possession of drugs. They both remain in custody for questioning.

Inspector Daniel Kabal, from Greater Manchester Police’s Specialist Operations Branch said: “Our officers acted quickly and decisively to bring this pursuit to a stop to protect the public.

"The actions of the vehicle were extremely dangerous and could have had fatal consequences. Thankfully, no members of the public were injured and I am pleased to say that my officers are safe too.
