Dortmund in meltdown as Rangers Europa League rivals’ lack of class slammed by Lothar Matthaus
German legends Lothar Matthaus and Thomas Doll have put the boot into Rangers’ Euro rivals Borussia Dortmund ahead of next week’s Europa League play-off first leg.
Matthaus, who played in five World Cups, says BvB lack mentality and class.
And former Dortmund coach Doll says “Bayern are laughing their asses off” after his old club effectively ruled themselves out of the Bundesliga title race.
BvB crashed to a disastrous 5-2 defeat at home to Bayer Leverkusen at the weekend which leaves them nine points behind Munich who are now on course for a 10th successive German crown.
Both star striker Erling Haaland and World Cup winning defender Mats Hummels missed the match – but they are expected to face Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s Rangers next week at the Westfalen Stadium.
Matthaus said: "This Borussia Dortmund team simply lacks consistency, mentality and class.
"Dortmund have had a few managers in recent years, but in the end it won't be enough to win the Bundesliga this season either.
"Marco Rose's team and all the other so-called Bayern Munich pursuers lack that certain something to win the title. Of course, this is due to the better economic opportunities in Bavaria. But the financial aspect alone is not decisive."
And Dortmund boss Rose was forced to explain why he had a huge bust-up with a fan who made his way towards the dug-outs to berate him during their weekend thumping.
Rose explained: "I'd rather not talk about what he said that made me turn around and confront him.
"When children can hear things like that, it becomes difficult."
