Eddie Howe admits that a venomous backheel goal like Bruno Guimaraes' winning strike was not something he was expecting after signing the Brazil international for £33.5million from Lyon in January. The audacious goal goes down as one of the best ever debut goals for a Newcastle player in the Premier League and it left Howe beaming last night at St Mary's.
The 2-1 win over Southampton also leaves United on the brink of Premier League safety and in fine spirits during their stay here in the south of England ahead of Sunday's trip to crisis club Chelsea. When asked if such a goal was on Bruno's highlights reel, Howe confessed he's been signed to play as a number 6 more than anything else.
He said: "Goal-scoring is not something he has made a name for himself doing but he is capable of the unexpected and that is what he did. "The goal was something we probably did not expect from him but shows his technical ability and he is going to be a huge player for us.
"I thought it was 'welcome to the Premier League' for Bruno, an end-to-end game, high in transitions and very physical. "It will be a really good experience for him.
