Doctor Who star 'favourite' to replace Neil Dudgeon on Midsomer Murders after 'cancellation' remark

Since its inception in 1997, the sought-after ITV show Midsomer Murders has captivated audiences worldwide, especially after it hit popular streaming platforms.

Throughout the show's 27-year run, two DCI Barnabys have led it to enduring success.

From the very first episode until his departure in 2011, John Nettles embodied the role, eventually handing over the reins when his character opted for retirement. Neil Dudgeon then stepped into the esteemed position as DCI John Barnaby, Tom's cousin, taking over as the series' leading man.

In recent months, the web has been abuzz with speculation about Neil potentially being replaced after a 13-year tenure as Midsomer's premiere sleuth.

Sportscasting.com places former Doctor Who protagonist David Tennant as the frontrunner to snag the coveted role, offering odds of 4/1, reports the Express.

Hot on his tail is Martin Freeman of The Office fame and Ralf Little, the freshly departed detective from Death in Paradise, with odds standing at 6/1 and 7/1, respectively.

Commenting on the rumours about the next DCI Barnaby, Sportscasting spokesperson Andy Newton remarked: "The next DCI Barnaby odds are a tight affair with many big names being thrown around including former Dr Who David Tennant, who would certainly be a big enough star to fill.
