Speed limits could soon be reduced on roads across Manchester. The town hall is considering a 20mph restriction on roads in residential areas across the city.

Meanwhile, all main roads could be cut to 30mph, including a permanent restriction on the Mancunian Way. The plans were discussed at a council meeting yesterday (January 15).

It comes as council chiefs say the number of pedestrians and cyclists who are killed or seriously injured on the city's roads has increased in recent years. In 2023, 77 pedestrians and 41 cyclists were involved in a collision across the city.

But similar moves to cut speed limits across the UK have led to controversy. In Wales, 30mph roads in built-up areas were cut to 20mph, back in September 2023.

The move sparked protests and a review from the Welsh Government, with some roads now set to return to 30mph, and leaders in Manchester are mindful of the backlash seen in Wales. Manchester's next steps for road speeds are yet to be announced.
