Director joins call for more government investment as Blue House wins Halifield inter-house meet

Sports Director, Halifield Schools, Christian Igweh, has joined calls for more government investment in sports, saying such investment would help in engaging the youths positively and address the problem of insecurity in the country.

Igweh, who is also Chairman, Planning Committee, Halifield Schools’ Seventh Biennial Inter-House Sports Competition held at Yaba College of Technology, urged government to increase sports budgetary allocation and institute academies for football, basketball and other games to groom the youth. He said the academies would take many youths out of the streets and discourage those with tendency to indulge in banditry and other vices.

He also called for revival of school sports competitions across the nation to unearth talented athletes from the grassroots and create career opportunities for budding talents.

At the inter-house sports competition, Blue House emerged the overall best; Green House came second, while Yellow House took the third position.

“Sports is a key part of our programme in Halifield Schools, as we believe that while some will excel in academics, some would also take to sports,” he said.

Also speaking at the event, the Director, Halifield Schools, Mrs. Halima Oke, said the school could not have inter-house sports for three years because of COVID-19 outbreak, adding, however, that “we have come to realise that education is not just academics. It is one of those things that enhance academics.
