Diogo Dalot has Manchester United chance that few are getting under Erik ten Hag

Diogo Dalot has a big summer ahead at Manchester United.

The Portugal international managed to assert himself as the club’s first choice-right back by the end of last season. Aaron Wan-Bissaka has since been made available for transfer, meaning the picture for the upcoming campaign looks promising for Dalot — for the moment.

However, his first team status doesn’t negate the fact failed to score or, more worryingly, assist a single goal in his 30 appearances last term. The 23-year-old was given an unexpected shot at regular football by Ralf Rangnick last season amid United’s poor campaign and, although he showed flashes of quality, didn’t produce the stats.

Many supporters feel he isn’t up to the standards required at the club if they are to become top four regulars once again. But Erik ten Hag has already refused to stand in the way of Wan-Bissaka’s possible exit and so Dalot will get the chance to impress the Dutchman in pre-season and geyond.

If Wan-Bissaka does end up leaving United, unless another player arrives, Dalot may find himself as the only first-team right-back at the club. And even if a new acquisition does arrive, Ten Hag will need back-up.

Dalot's performances in pre-season may influence which way the Dutch coach approaches the market. He has been linked with a potential move for PSV full-back Denzel Dumfries and Sergino Dest of Barcelona, both of whom would surely demand game time if they came to United.
