Dina Asher-Smith finishes eighth in the women’s 100m final at the World Athletics Championship in Budapest

Dina Asher-Smith missed out on a medal in the 100m final at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest on Monday.

The 27-year-old from Orpington finished eighth as Sha'Carri Richardson (USA) took gold in a Championship-best time of 10.65secs from lane nine, with Jamaica’s Shericka Jackson taking silver in 10.72, ahead of Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce in 10.77.

Asher-Smith, who timed 11.00, said: “It’s not been a fab day for me, I’m very disappointed as I feel like I’m in an amazing place.

“I couldn’t feel my legs (in the semi-final) it was a bit weird. I’m in much better shape than that

“I can run so it is what it is. It’s the world final so the time to do it is now, I wanted more from myself.”

Asher-Smith had qualified in 11.01 from the semi-finals as one of the fastest losers, finishing a far from convincing third after a bright start out of the blocks.

It was enough to give her a place in the final – by one-thousandth of a second. However, she had little time to recover, with the final taking place just over an hour after the semi-final.

She had timed 11.04 to finish second in her heat on Sunday.

Asher-Smith still has hopes of medals to come though, as she is also taking part in the 200m and 4x100m relay.
