World Athletics Championships: Irish in action on Day 5

Rhasidat Adeleke will aim to become the first Irish sprinter to win a medal at the World Championships in the final of the women's 400m on Wednesday evening.

The Tallaght sprinter, who has taken almost a second and a half off the Irish record in the past 12 months, enters this evening's final in Budapest as a genuine medal hope.

Adeleke booked her spot in the final with a sub-50 second run in Monday's semi-final, powering home in the home stretch to take second place behind Domincan Olympic silver medallist Marileidy Paulino.

Adeleke's final will take place at 8.35pm on Wednesday evening.

Limerick sprinter Sarah Lavin will race in the semi-final of the 100m hurdles after qualifying in the third automatic spot in Tuesday's heat, posting a time of 12.69, just 0.02 outside her personal best.

Lavin will aim to reach the final, with her semi-final scheduled for 7.40pm.

Earlier on, Louise Shanahan will begin her World Championships tilt as she goes in the heats of the 800m at 9.29am on Wednesday.

She will aim to match the performance of male compatriot over the distance, Mark English, who qualified for the semis after an anxious wait on Tuesday evening.

Shananan was a finalist in the 800m in last year's European Championships in Munich.
