Different Class: Doherty's Crucible glory 25 years on

It's 25 years to the day since Ken Doherty won his first and only World Snooker Championship title after beating defending champion Stephen Hendry 18-12 in the final at the Crucible.

The Dubliner also became the first man to win the World Championship at junior, amateur and professional level that day.

It was a truly special achievement that still resonates today.

"Going into the final, I knew I was due to play Stephen Hendry, who hadn't been beaten in the previous five years. He was going for six in a row," Doherty told RTÉ Sport's Dave Kelly on the Different Class Podcast.

"It was going to be tough, a tall order. I had some success over Stephen since I turned professional in the few years that I was a pro and I was sort of relishing it rather than worrying what he was going to do

"I knew the way he was going to play, I was well aware of the type of game that he had, he was more or less invincible at the Crucible. It was his sort of back yard, basically.

"But I felt that sort of belief in myself, 'this is your chance, Ken, these chances don’t come around that often, you’ve got to grasp this and give it 100%, every single shot, every frame’.

"After watching Higgins win in ‘82 and Taylor in ‘85, to walk around the table and look up at my friends up in the balcony, they were all cheering for me. Niall Quinn was there, Eamon Dunphy had come over for it.

"I knew there was an interest and that it was building, but I didn’t want to know. I didn’t want to get carried away with it."
