Dickson and Waddilove on track for gold fleet in Lanzarte
Irish Olympians Robert Dickson and Seán Waddilove are on course to qualify for the gold fleet race at the 49er World Championship in Lanzarote.
With two days of racing in the books, Dickson and Waddilove sit in 18th place overall, with the top 25 teams securing their place in the gold fleet.
Dickson and Waddilove managed to claim two top-10 finishes in Wednesday's three races although a 15th place finish dragged them closer to the cut-off point that they would have liked.
The Irish veterans are competing against Crosshaven pair Séafra Guilfoyle and Johnny Durcan, who are hoping to edge out Dickson and Waddilove for the sole Irish berth at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
The two Irish boats are contesting a three-event selection trials to decide who will be nominated by Irish Sailing to the Olympic Federation of Ireland for inclusion in the Olympic team.
Guilfoyle and Durcan started the first day brilliantly, claiming a second-placed finish in their opening race but an eighth place was as good as got today, as they finished 20th and 21st in their other two races.
That 21st placed finish was discarded as their worst score but they go into Thursday's racing in 26th place and will need to improve if they're to qualify for the gold fleet race.
Gold fleet racing for the final round commences on Friday followed by Sunday's medal race for the top-10 overall to decide the podium.
