Diaz, Salah, Mane: Which footballers have played the most games in 21/22?

Luis Diaz was Liverpool‘s game-changer on Tuesday evening.

At half-time in their Champions League semi-final second leg against Villarreal, the Reds were 2-0 down and the tie was level on aggregate.

Unai Emery’s side were magnificent in the opening 45 minutes on home soil, with Boulaye Dia and ex-Arsenal man Francis Coquelin grabbing the goals.

But in the second half, Liverpool were a completely different animal and much of that was down to the introduction of Diaz.

The Colombian star replaced Diogo Jota at the interval and Villarreal just could not deal with him.

Diaz scored Liverpool’s second goal, with Jurgen Klopp’s outfit going on to win the match at the Estadio de la Cerámica 3-2.

The Reds have now booked their place in Paris for the 2021/22 Champions League final as they pursue an unprecedented quadruple.

Without the signing of Diaz from FC Porto in January, it’s highly unlikely that Liverpool would still be in the mix to win all four major trophies.

He’s added a new dimension to the attack and has also allowed Klopp to rotate his forward line very effectively.

And as well as dazzling on the pitch, Diaz has proven himself to be something of a footballing machine in 2021/22.

That’s because no footballer has played more official games for club and country than him this season, according to Transfermarkt.

Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane aren’t far behind their teammate, though…

19. Harry Kane (Tottenham Hotspur & England) – 57 matches

18. Callum McGregor (Celtic & Scotland) – 57 matches

17. Tomas Soucek (West Ham & Czech Republic) – 57 matches

16. Rodrigo De Paul (Atletico Madrid & Argentina) – 57 matches
