Dermot Gallagher weighs in on Kieran Trippier incident during Newcastle United's Man City draw

Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher says the 'right decision' was made to overturn Kieran Trippier's red card for his challenge on Manchester City midfielder Kevin de Bruyne.

Newcastle and Man City produced an early contender for game of the season as the two sides served up a six-goal thriller on Sunday. Ilkay Gundogan gave the reigning Premier League champions an early lead, before goals from Miguel Almiron and Callum Wilson fired Newcastle into the lead before the break.

Trippier scored a sensational free-kick to give Newcastle a two-goal advantage until Erling Haaland and Bernardo Silva scored twice in quick succession to earn City a point.

Australian referee Jarred Gillett brandished a straight red card when Kieran Trippier lunged into a cynical challenge on de Bruyne in the final 15 minutes. However, after reviewing the incident on the pitchside monitor, Gillett reversed his decision by swapping the red in favour for a yellow card.

Talking on Sky Sports weekly Ref Watch show, Gallagher said: "I can understand why the referee has given a red card. He's got the 'staring down the barrel of a gun' view, he thinks he has kicked him across the knee.

"I think Peter Bankes was excellent, he looked at it and asked Jarred Gillett what he'd seen. He came back to him and said, 'I'd describe it as a cynical tackle, but not serious foul play.

"He said, 'he hasn't caught him with the studs across the knee, I'd advise you to go to the monitor and have a look'. He went and had a look and, to his credit, he agreed and the right decision was made."
