Derek Walsh ends reign as Mayo hurling boss

Derek Walsh has stepped down from his position as manager of the Mayo senior hurlers.

Walsh was appointed in 2018 on a three-year term. In his first campaign he led the county to the Allianz Hurling League Division 2B title.

In 2020 he got to them to the Nicky Rackard final in Croke Park, where they were beaten by Donegal.

The following year Walsh guided Mayo to the Nicky Rackard decider again - and this time they tasted glory by overcoming Tyrone.

His tenure was extended for a further two years and in 2022 he once again got Mayo back to GAA headquarters, this time for the Christy Ring finale against Kildare. They were well beaten by the Lilywhites - 2-29 to 0-19 - but Walsh's legacy is strong.

"I want to thank Derek and his backroom team for their commitment, dedication and the huge effort they put into keeping Mayo hurling competitive over the past few years," said Mayo GAA chairperson Seamus Tuohy.
