Derek McInnes adamant Kilmarnock penalty should have stood as Bobby Wales special moment lauded

Derek McInnes says he loves Bobby Wales and believes his fairytale finale can set Kilmarnock up to pass their Tromso test.

But the Rugby Park boss admits his team will have “no chance” if they concede the type of ridiculous goal which almost sank them. McInnes was thrilled to see teenager Wales enjoy a special moment as he levelled the tie ahead of Thursday’s return. The 19-year-old struck his first-ever Killie goal and the manager said: “It’s instinct. It falls to him and he just gets enough connection.

“He’s going to score loads of goals for Kilmarnock. I love the kid, I think he’s doing so well. He has a quiet confidence, which I really like about him. The more goals he scores, the more impact he can have on our team, the better for him. I thought it was no more than we deserved, What pleased me was the fact that the way we finished the game.

“That’s why we’re in Europe, because we never know our beat. You always remember how a game finishes. I think they think the game’s won, it’s not. We’ll look forward to next Thursday. Confidence-wise for the team, I think it [Wales goal] was important. I feel a quiet determination within the team.”

Killie led through Kyle Vassell, but fell behind with McInnes annoyed at Tromso’s second as he stated: “It’s a ridiculous goal to lose for us. We could have stopped it at source, at the edge of the box. We could have stopped it again in the halfway line. We could have stopped it before it arrived at the 18-yard box.

“Ultimately, we still need to be better and not concede those types of goals because, if we do, we’ve no chance. If we can sort that part out and keep the ball out of the net, then I believe it’s a game where we can go and score.”
