Derek Asamoah scored both goals for Sittingbourne in a 2-1 win over AFC Whyteleafe – Reece Prestedge’s side host Jersey Bulls on Saturday with Ebbsfleet’s Elijah Anthony added to the squad
Veteran striker Derek Asamoah proved he’s still got it at the age of 44 after scoring both goals in Sittingbourne’s comeback victory.
The Brickies were a goal down at the break against fellow promotion hopefuls AFC Whyteleafe last Saturday before Asamoah showed his pedigree with a quickfire double to turn the match around.
A 2-1 victory for Reece Prestedge’s side extended their winning run to four games in Isthmian South East, dropping just two points in their last 10 league outings.
The Sittingbourne boss said: “It’s the kind of run which you would bite your hand off for but you can’t get carried away with it. You just have to go to the next game. I know it’s a cliche, but the next game’s the most important one.”
Asamoah’s double kept their form going and the manager saluted his evergreen front-man.
“He’s 44 and still plugging away,” said the Brickies boss.
“I’m pleased for him because he does work hard and grafts and at 44 he’s still pretty sharp.
“The second one was a tap-in but the first one, he got put in and slid it past the keeper, just your typical striker finishes.
“That’s the nature of the beast as a striker, being in the right position at the right time in the box, and the second goal was probably exactly that.
“He’s still got it. He still looks sharp. He’s still doing what he can and he looks after himself really well. He’s quicker than me and I’m younger! He must be doing alright.”
It was Sittingbourne’s first game back since a post-Christmas 2-1 win at Merstham on December 27.
They did the business on the road again, with Prestedge explaining why last season’s FA Vase finalists Whyteleafe are such a tough team to beat.
