Delta Queens in must win game against Kenya’s Lakers

Nigeria’s only representative at the ongoing 2023 Africa Club Hockey Championships in Malawi, Queens Hockey Club of Asaba, is sure of playing in the final of the tournament.

As at yesterday, the Asaba-based team was third on the log behind GRA Ladies of Ghana and Lakers of Kenya. While the Ghanaian team has 13 points from five matches, Lakers have 11 points and Delta Queens have 10 points from same number of matches.

However, the Chairman of Delta Sports Commission, Chief Tonobok Okowa, who is with the hockey team in Malawi, told The Guardian, yesterday, that Delta Queens would get the ticket to feature in the final.

“We played draw against the Blazers of Kenya in our game on Thursday, but I am hoping we will win our next match to pick the final ticket,” Okowa stated.

Delta Queens began the tournament on a bright note, beating the host Capital Braves of Malawi 17-0, had a 9-0 win over Genetrix Ladies, also of Malawi, but suffered a 3-4 defeat to GRA Ladies of Ghana.

According to Coach Ade Jacobs, the table for the Women’s League is straightforward. “GRA of Ghana are in the finals already. Lakers of Kenya need a draw to maintain their second place and play in the finals. Delta Queens must win against Lakers for a podium finish in the finals.”

The last match will hold at 2.00pm Nigerian time today.
