DeBues-Stafford runs to her 8th Canadian record, smashing 37-year-old mark in 10 km road race

Gabriela DeBues-Stafford is not finished adding her name to the Athletics Canada record book.

She finished the Jarrow 10-kilometre road race in northeastern England in 31 minutes 37.8 seconds on Sunday, six seconds faster than Lynn Williams (now Kanuka) at the Red Lobster 10K Classic in Orlando, Fla., on March 11, 1989.

DeBues-Stafford, 31, also set a new Jarrow 10K course record, topping the 34:08 from Sophie Hicks of the United Kingdom in 2025. Rose Harvey of Great Britain was DeBues-Stafford's closest competitor Sunday, finishing second in 34:10.

Before Sunday, her most recent Canadian mark was set indoors in the 5,000 metres on Feb. 11, 2022 at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational, hosted by Boston University.

The Toronto native holds Canadian indoor/outdoor marks on the track in the 1,500 metres, mile and 5,000, along with the indoor 3,000.

Sunday’s race was contested on the streets of Jarrow on a flat, two-lap course, finishing at Monkton Stadium.

In June, she won her third consecutive 5,000m title and seventh overall at the Canadian track and field championships in Ottawa.

The two-time Olympian went on to place 14th in the 5,000 at the Commonwealth Games in Scotland.

DeBues-Stafford completed her track season on Aug. 9, finishing fifth 4:03.53 at the British Milers Club Grand Prix in Twickenham.

Following a short holiday, she returned to training ahead of the World Athletics Road Running Championships in Copenhagen, where DeBues-Stafford ran 4:30.59 in the mile for ninth place.

“You can never take competing at a world championship event for granted,” she told Athletics Illustrated. “It was nice to feel a bit more myself while doing something
