Dean Henderson aims another dig at Manchester United as he talks England World Cup fears

Dean Henderson has aimed another dig at Manchester United over his lack of opportunities last season while addressing his chances of making England's World Cup squad.

Henderson, who is currently on loan at Premier League newcomers Nottingham Forest, was expected to challenge David de Gea for the No.1 spot at Old Trafford last term after regularly occupying the gloves towards the end of the 2020/21 campaign. However, the former Sheffield United loanee contracted Covid-19 in pre-season, leaving him playing catch-up.

The 25-year-old was restricted to just three appearances in all competitions, all of which were in cup matches. He has not played in the Premier League for United since the final day of the 2020/21 season.

Therefore, it was no real surprise when United allowed him to join Forest on a season-long loan deal during the summer, offering him the chance to not only try and get his career back on track but also force his way into the England squad for the upcoming World Cup. He is one of three goalkeepers who have been included in the squad for the current international break, joining Arsenal's Aaron Ramsdale and Nick Pope of Newcastle United.

However, Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford is expected to return to the fold once he has recovered from his current injury, meaning Henderson could be at risk of dropping out of the squad. And with that in mind, the United shot-stopper has conceded that he is lagging behind his competitors, pointing to his lack of action last term.

"I think I'm behind at the minute, for sure, obviously last season not playing much and the other lads have done unbelievably well," said Henderson, speaking on Soccer AM.
