De Jong, Depay, Trincao: XI of Barcelona players that Xavi could sell

Barcelona’s tense financial situation remains a significant difficult for the club to navigate and correct.

The club are trying to clear themselves of mounds of debt that has accumulated over recent years as a result of overexuberance in the transfer market and failure to spend with any caution or real strategy.

The world record sale of Neymar in 2017 prompted Barcelona to go on a spending frenzy to try and sculpt a super squad, signing the likes of Philippe Coutinho, Ousmane Dembele, Frenkie de Jong, Antoine Griezmann and others, all for exceptional transfer fees.

And where transfer fees were smaller for other signings, wages remained sky high. This has landed La Blaugrana in the situation they currently remain in, which resulted in them being unable to re-sign Lionel Messi to a new deal and losing their seven-time Ballon d’Or winner in 2021.

President Joan Laporta had created some breathing space last summer with Messi’s departure and other avenues to recoup finances, allowing Barcelona to make additions to the squad in 2020/21.

But, with them at maximum financial capacity once again this summer, there is expected to be another fire sale of players at the Camp Nou, in order keep the club afloat, which is an obscene situation for them to be in.

With debts sitting at around €1 billion, The Athletic report that those debts and La Liga’s salary cap is currently stopping Barcelona from registering free agent signings such as Franck Kessie and Andreas Christensen, who were both expected to join the club upon the expiry of their deals at AC Milan and Chelsea respectively.

As such, they have pulled together an entire XI of players that are surplus to requirements at Barça who could move on, which highlights the damning state
