De Gea equals Schmeichel's clean sheet record at Man United after Leicester win

Manchester United shot-stopper David De Gea has equalled legendary goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel's clean sheet record at the club following their 3-0 win against Leicester City at Old Trafford on Sunday.

The 32-year-old Spaniard arrived from Atletico Madrid in 2011 for a then-British record fee of £18.9 million for a goalkeeper. De Gea also remains the only player, alongside Phil Jones, who was part of Sir Alex Ferguson's final season at the club in 2013.

De Gea has gone level with Schmeichel of 180 clean sheets in 521 appearances for the Red Devils. However, the Dane, who spent eight years at the club, did so in 398 appearances in the famous red jersey.

Under the new management of Eric ten Hag, De Gea has surpassed Gary Baily (161 clean sheets, 375 app) and Alex Stepney (165, 539 app) with 15 clean sheets in all competitions.

Meanwhile, the Spaniard, whose contract expires in June 2024, also broke into the top 10 list of the most appearances for the club. De Gea, however, is expected to extend his stay in the coming months with a new contract.

De Gea has won the Premier League, FA Cup, League Cup, and Europa League since he touched foot at the club's Carrington base.

The goalkeeper will be pivotal for the club as United are fighting on all fronts this season as they prepare for matches against Barcelona in the Europa League (Thursday, 22:00 SA time) and Newcastle United (Sunday, 18:30 SA time) in the Carabao Cup final next week.
