David Wotherspoon on the "incredible" support from St Johnstone fans and his next steps in football

David Wotherspoon has spoken of the “incredible” support that has come his way following his departure from St Johnstone.

The triple major cup-winning legend was not offered a new contract at the end of last season and that brought the curtain down on a hugely successful 10- year association with his local team.

It led to an outpouring of emotion from Saints fans, with Wotherspoon revealing his phone was non-stop with kind messages.

“It was quite incredible,” he said of the support. “I was really overwhelmed by the whole reaction and the comments that came flooding in across social media.

“So many people messaged me – players, staff members, friends, family – the outpouring was really touching.

“I’ve been grateful for all the support over the years and grateful for it over the last few weeks.”

Wotherspoon, who is currently on duty with the Canadian national team, had to reassure team-mates that he wasn’t retiring - such was the level of supportive messages.

He explained: “One of my Canada team-mates messaged me if I was retiring because of everything that was being said on Twitter.

“It had blown up. I was like ‘no, no, no, not yet.’”

Despite his Saints exit, Canada manager John Herdman included Wotherspoon in his squad for the upcoming Gold Cup which begins this month.

“It’s been a quick turnaround from the end of the season,” Wotherspoon said.

“I had a nice couple of weeks to spend time with my family but we had to cut our holidays a few hours short to make a flight to Las Vegas.

“I’m loving being back with the Canada squad. It’s been perfect for me.

“The holiday helped take my mind off everything and now I’ve got this to be part of, which has given me a focus and a drive for the next couple of weeks.

“I’ll get in great
