David Marshall dealt major Scotland blow as QPR goalkeeper season ended by injury days after recall

Luckless Scotland keeper David Marshall has been told his season is over.

It also looks highly unlikely that the experienced shot stopper will be available for June’s World Cup play-off semi-final with Ukraine.

Marshall suffered a hamstring injury in Wednesday’s defeat to Nottingham Forest which forced him to pull out of the Scotland squad for the friendlies with Poland and in Wales or Austria.

Marshall and QPR teammate Chris Willock have both been ruled out for the campaign with hamstring injuries.

QPR’S head of medical Dr Imtiaz Ahmad, speaking on his club website, said: “This is bitterly disappointing news for the players and the team.

“David has suffered a tendon tear in his left hamstring. While he doesn’t require surgery, he will also be unavailable for selection for the remainder of the campaign.

“Both players are naturally very disappointed. We will be working closely with the pair over the coming weeks and months.”

QPR boss Mark Warburton took Marshall in on-loan from Derby County and accepted the news was a sore one

Warburton added: “It is a bitter blow to lose two high-quality players from the squad who have been in such excellent form for us. Unfortunately, this is football and we have to deal with these challenges.”

Marshall had only just forced his way back into the Scotland squad after being frozen out at Derby County. His place has since been handed to St Johnstone ’s Zander Clark.
