David Gray 'offered' next Hibs manager job as club legend gets dream chance

Hibs Scottish Cup-winning legend and interim boss David Gray has reportedly been offered the top job on a permanent basis.

The 36-year-old has been in the dug-out since the axe fell on Nick Montgomery with just two Scottish Premiership games of the season left having only been in the job for eight months. The Easter Road side are under pressure to get the next appointment right after going through a succession of managers in a short period of time.

Gray earned his place in the Leith club's folklore when he headed home the winning goal in the 2016 Scottish Cup final against Rangers to end over a century of hurt in the famous competition. And now, according to the Scottish Sun, sporting director Malky Mackay has identified him as the many to lead the club next season. The former defender retired from playing a couple of years ago and was part of the club's coaching staff but has been interim boss on four occasions.

He has never hidden his desire to be a boss in his own right and this could now be his big chance. He said last month: "I'm not shying away from it. I believe I can do it. I've demonstrated I can. Ultimately it's what the club want to do moving forward. If they feel I'm ready to do it and they want me to do it that's a decision they can make."
