David Gilbert reaches last eight at European Masters
David Gilbert continued his fine form at the BetVictor European Masters with a 5-3 win over Pang Junxu to reach the quarter-finals.
Gilbert will face Fan Zhengyi in the last eight and has turned his fortunes around after an indifferent run heading into the tournament which saw him lose in qualifying for the BetVictor Welsh Open and Nirvana Turkish Masters and lose in the first round of the Cazoo Players Championship.
Gilbert took a 2-0 lead before Pang pulled it back to 2-2 but he restored his two-frame advantage.
Pang again rallied but a break of 69 in the eighth frame settled matters.
Gilbert told the World Snooker Tour's official website: "I played well, that was the best I have felt in a long time.
"I scored well and that’s what the game is all about. I was 2-0 up and cruising then he potted a couple of absolute worldies and fought back to 2-2. But I finished the match off well."
Tom Ford had breaks of 65, 99 and 77 on his way to a 5-3 win over Fraser Patrick to earn a date with Ronnie O’Sullivan.
Kurt Maflin had three century breaks but that was not enough as runs of 70, 72, 85 and 91 secured a 5-3 win for Anthony McGill.
McGill will meet Liang Wenbo, who saw off Yuan Sijun 5-2.
