David de Gea 'on borrowed time' as Manchester United sent surprise transfer message

Former Premier League striker Kevin Phillips has boldly claimed that Manchester United should be looking to sell goalkeeper David de Gea.

The Spaniard has been among the star performers for United this season in what has been a disappointing campaign. De Gea has already received three player of the month awards for United — claiming the accolades between November and January — and is the standout contender for the club's player of the season.

He has been called into action on a number of occasions, making superb saves against the likes of Wolves and Leicester City. The 31-year-old has a year remaining on his deal with United and celebrated a decade in the Premier League last season.

"In my opinion, I think they should be moving him on. I think with the new manager coming in, that would be the best course of action," Phillips told Football Insider on De Gea.

"You get to a stage in your career where you’ve been at a club a long time, like (Marcus) Rashford and De Gea, and things need to change. They need fresh faces through the door – and maybe they could even go down a younger route.

"I think De Gea is on borrowed time at United along with many other players. It’ll be interesting to see if that contract materialises when Ten Hag comes in."
