David de Gea 'in talks' to seal shock transfer a year after Manchester United exit

Former Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea is 'in talks' to join Italian side Genoa, according to a report by The Athletic.

The Spaniard, 33, has been without a club since leaving Old Trafford in July last year. He left United after making 545 appearances across a 12-year period.

It was reported during the week that De Gea, who won eight trophies during his time in M16, was attracting interest from clubs in Italy, the United States and Saudi Arabia. It was also claimed that an unnamed English club had expressed interest in his signature.

It is now reported that he is in discussions with Genoa about the possibility of joining the Serie A outfit. They finished 11th in the Italian top flight last season after being promoted from Serie B in 2022/23.

Since leaving United a year ago, the goalkeeper, who will turn 34 in November, has dropped various hints about his future on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), often leading to widespread speculation. On July 20, he posted an emoji of an hourglass with sand flowing through it, suggesting a major update on his future was imminent.

De Gea last played on June 3 last year, starting United's 2-1 defeat to Manchester City in the FA Cup final at Wembley.

Initially, there was confidence on both United's side and De Gea's that he would sign a new contract and stay at the club beyond the end of the 2022/23 season. However, there was a shift from the club on his position after he was guilty of committing one too many errors in the closing stages of the campaign.
