Daryl Powell needs the most precious commodity to fix broken Warrington Wolves

When Warrington Wolves took Daryl Powell from Castleford Tigers as a replacement for Steve Price, the move was designed to end 67 years of hurt.

It was 1955 when Warrington, one of the most ambitious and progressive clubs in Super League, could last call themselves champions of England. Yes, there have been four Challenge Cup wins since 2009, three during Tony Smith’s reign and one under fellow Aussie Price.

But a Grand Final win is what Warrington’s wealthy owners, Stuart Middleton and Simon Moran, so desperately crave. Both men are Warringtonians and hugely successful businessmen who have followed the Wire since childhood and poured vast sums of their personal fortunes into the club down the years.

The Wolves have made it to Old Trafford four times and lost on each occasion, but the appointment of Powell encouraged hopes of finally achieving what has become a Holy Grail – a Super League title. It took Leeds Rhinos 32 years to become champions again when Smith delivered their first title win in 2004.

In football, giants such as Manchester United went 26 years without winning the top-flight championship. In 2020, United’s hated rivals Liverpool clinched their 19th top flight title – but only after a 30-year wait.

Sixty-seven years, though, is a hell of a long time between drinks for a club of Warrington’s spending power and ambition. Right now, after 12 rounds of the season, Powell’s side lie closer to the relegation zone than the Super League summit.
