If there was one recurring word from Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp in the final, dramatic months of last season, then it was “fluidity”.

Every time he spoke of his attack, he used it. It is a word which defines his attacking philosophy…and also explains Liverpool's very determined, and quite possibly record-breaking, pursuit of Darwin Nunez.

Put simply, Klopp doesn’t want his forwards - or any player who ventures forward - to play positions. He wants them to create havoc in the box by inter-changing almost at will. And that is why Nunez has become his number one target of the summer.

The Benfica forward can operate as a traditional number nine…if there is such a thing in modern football at the highest level, and given he is regarded as a replacement for Sadio Mane, that is significant. Mane has been playing largely through the middle since the arrival of Luis Diaz in January, with Liverpool’s forward line consisting of three players (with Mo Salah) who can all operate anywhere in the penalty area.
