Darren Moore issues cautious response as he assesses Sheffield Wednesday’s promotion chances

Darren Moore insists that he is not looking beyond today’s game at Wycombe Wanderers as his Sheffield Wednesday chase promotion.

The Owls have been in superb form recently and whilst they still face a battle to finish in the play-off places, they are only four points away from the top two, with Rotherham and MK Dons both struggling.

However, Moore wouldn’t be drawn on Wednesday’s chances of catching the pair, or even their promotion chances in general, as he insists he is taking on a game-by-game basis when speaking to the club’s media.

“The fans and media will discuss it in their own way, but for us it’s about competing for those three points. We’re not looking too far ahead, it’s just about focusing on the next game. We don’t look at the next three games as a block. Isolate each one, full focus on the next game and I think that’s the best way to approach it.”

The Yorkshire outfit are looking to extend an eight game unbeaten run against Gareth Ainsworth’s side.

The verdict

This is the sort of sensible response you would expect from Moore because saying anything else could increase the pressure on his team, which is not what you want at this stage of the campaign.

Plus, it’s an approach that has worked well for Wednesday in the past few months so he isn’t going to change now.

A top two finish is still a long-shot but you can never say never in football, and if they get three points against a good Wycombe side then they may just close the gap.
