Darragh Egan open to 'more traditional style' for Wexford

New Wexford manager Darragh Egan has signalled his intention to move away from the running game employed by his predecessor Davy Fitzgerald - though the Tipp native is reserving the right to mix up the gameplan.

"We'll have to tweak our style of hurling depending on the opposition that’s in hand," he told RTÉ Sport ahead of the Model men's league opener against All-Ireland champions Limerick on Sunday.

"We’re going to have mix it up a small bit. There may be a more traditional style but also it will depend on the opposition that’s in front of us on any given day.

"In January we went direct with the ball a bit more but we need to tweak it again now.

"In some games we’re going to have change our structure and setup, depending on the opposition and the players at our disposal.

"Dublin performed very well against us last Saturday and we need to find different ways of approaching each game."

The former Tipperary forward and goalkeeper, who turns 36 on Saturday, began his first season as an inter-county manager last month and has been pleased with what he has seen to date - the 16-point Walsh Cup final defeat to the Dubs aside.

"After being a coach for Liam Sheedy for the last three years it is new territory to go in as manager," he admitted. "It has been really enjoyable and fruitful so far.

"Our first challenge is to get over our Walsh Cup defeat to Dublin last weekend when we were quite poor but overall January as a whole was very good for us. We saw a lot of players.

"We have some very good hurlers in Wexford.

"Some of our 19 and 20-year-olds performed very well throughout the pre-season campaign. I'm really looking forward to see how they perform in the league campaign.
