Darragh Egan feels Wexford are firing in the right direction

Wexford manager Darragh Egan feels his side are heading in the right direction as they picked up their first Allianz Hurling League win of the year against Westmeath.

Having lost to Galway by eight points last week, Wexford were eventually able to subdue a battling Westmeath at TEG Cusack Park on Sunday in Division 1 Group A, a victory over a side who managed to hold them to a draw in the Leinster Championship last year.

Speaking to RTÉ Sport after the 2-23 to 1-15 win, Egan sounded an optimistic tone about his side but added that they still have more improvements to make.

"It took us a long time to get an upper hand in the game but I felt our lads stuck with it very well and it's just not an easy place to come," he said of the Mullingar venue.

"We were here last year and we were lucky to get away with a draw but today we knew exactly what was facing us.

"It took us a while to break them down. It's hard to break their spirit up here, they're really good playing at home."

Next up for his team are Clare in two weeks time at Wexford Park and Egan is happy with the progression being made and feels a breakout performance is possible if they can improve their accuracy.

"Look, we're having shots at the goals and there's a day that'll happen that they'll go over and we're going to absolutely blitz someone," he said.

"Hopefully, that day comes soon enough because it's not easy on the sideline. But we've a load of new players in, a load of younger lads coming on the pitch there.

"Yes, we have to tidy up our shooting and yes, we have to be more aggressive in our running towards the posts and tidy it up a bit, but as of now is it a worry? Not really. I'm delighted that we're taking nearly 50 shots at the goals most days we go out.
