Dalton Smith explains why Josh Taylor vs Jack Catterall controversy won't bother him

Among the very best prospects in British boxing, Dalton Smith has more title glory in his sights this year.

The super-lightweight prospect, the latest talent off Sheffield’s sparking production line, is back in action on Saturday as he seeks to extend his record to 10-0 against Ray Moylette on the undercard of Kiko Martinez vs Josh Warrington.

Alongside his father and trainer Grant, the duo have worked together in climbing the professional ranks since making the switch in 2019 having opted against a run at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.

Smith collected the first of what is expected to be many titles when he picked up the English belt with a polished performance against Lee Appleyard in Manchester last May, blasting his rival with sharp, accurate shots en route to a sixth round stoppage win.

Next up was a trip to Austria to pick up the WBA Intercontinental strap with a points win over Brian Pelaez.

With the British title recently vacated by Sam Maxwell, it is an obvious next target for the 25-year-old as he seeks to close the gap on those at the top of his division.

‘I haven’t really got a timeline in my head. I take each fight as it comes but my end goal is to become a world champion and I believe I will,’ Smith told Metro.co.uk.

‘I have got a long way to go and I know I still have got a lot of proving to do and a lot more titles to win along the way. But I will get there.

‘With Sam Maxwell vacating the belt, it is another opportunity. Touch wood I come through this fight [against Moylette] with flying colours and I want to be chasing that British title after this. I don’t want to look too far ahead but why not, I would love to challenge for the British this year.’
