Cyriel Dessers lifts lid on handling 'difficult period' at Rangers as he takes Feyenoord lesson into Ibrox cauldron

Striker Cyriel Dessers has lifted the lid on how he avoided "burnout" in his career - and continues to handle the pressure of playing for Rangers.

Despite criticism of the amount of chances he passes up the frontman has earned, almost, universal acclaim for his knack of not hiding on the big occasions - having been Philippe Clement's go-to striker during his Ibrox tenure. However, it hasn't always been that way for the 29-year-old who has opened up on his use of a sports psychologist to get the best out of himself.

The Nigeria international has lifted the lid on the "frustrating situation" when he joined Feyenoord on loan from Genk that proved to be the turning point in his career - stating that he has "never really stopped" scoring since his first sit down with Daan Ruiter. Speaking to Belgian outlet Nieuwsblad, Dessers said: “I have been working with my own psychologist since Feyenoord and I honestly found that a relief.

"Of course, club psychologists say that you can tell them anything, but however you look at it: those people are paid by the club and therefore also work in the interest of the club. I felt that I never fully showed the back of my tongue.

“In my first season at Feyenoord, I started working with Daan Ruiter. I had just had a very frustrating season at KRC Genk. I felt that I had the qualities to play for a club like Genk, but I ran into Paul Onuachu, who broke one record after another. A very frustrating situation, because you keep doing your very best, while you know that the chance that you will get many minutes is small.
