Cyclist dies after being hit by Mercedes on major road

A cyclist has died after she was hit by a car in Tameside. The woman passed away in hospital following the crash in Ashton-Under-Lyne on Tuesday evening (August 30).

Police were called to Wellington Road at around 9.30pm following reports a black Mercedes was involved in a crash with a pedal cyclist. The collision occurred on the westbound carriageway.

The road was blocked off as paramedics attended the scene. The woman was taken to Manchester Royal Infirmary.

The Serious Collisions Unit began an investigation into the crash. Officers have now confirmed in a tweet that the cyclist has died. They are now appealing for more information following the fatal crash.

In a tweet on the GMP Tameside North and East account, officers said: "At around 9.30pm on August 30, a black Mercedes c220 collided with a pedal cyclist near the junction on Wellington Road in Ashton-Under-Lyne. The cyclist has since passed away and we are appealing for witnesses."
