Crystal Palace sack Patrick Vieira as manager ‘with enormous regret’

Crystal Palace have sacked manager Patrick Vieira after a run of one win in 14 Premier League games left the club three points above the relegation zone.

The chairman, Steve Parish, told the club website: “It is with enormous regret that this difficult decision has been made. Ultimately, results in recent months have placed us in a precarious league position and we felt a change is necessary to give us the best chance of retaining Premier League status.”

Vieira had been in charge at Selhurst Park since July 2021. He guided Palace to 12th in the Premier League and the FA Cup semi-final in his first season, and is believed to have been frustrated by the lack of investment in the summer and January transfer windows and would point his side having faced a run of fixtures against clubs in the top half.

“Patrick’s impact since joining us in the summer of 2021 has been significant, and he is held in the highest regard by myself, and all of his colleagues,” Parish said, who praised Vieira for getting the team to play “some exciting football” last season.
