Crystal Palace: 57-game star has 'saved Eagles about £15m’

Crystal Palace defender Tyrick Mitchell has ‘probably saved’ the club ‘about £15 million’ in transfer fees, according to Sky Sports journalist Michael Bridge.

The 22-year-old has gone from strength to strength since making his senior debut in July 2020, cementing his place as the Eagles’ first-choice left-back.

Manager Patrick Vieira embarked on a mass overhaul of the first-team squad after taking over the Selhurst Park hot seat from former boss Roy Hodgson.

Several ageing stars were allowed to depart Palace in the summer transfer window, including full-back Patrick van Aanholt, who joined Galatasaray as a free agent.

Van Aanholt had been a regular starter for the capital club throughout 2020/21 until it became clear he wasn’t going to put pen to paper on fresh terms.

The Netherlands international then failed to feature from the off in Palace’s final seven Premier League games of the campaign, allowing Mitchell to stake his claim for a spot in the starting XI on a long-term basis.

And the youngster clearly did enough to impress the incoming Vieira and the club’s hierarchy as they decided against bringing in a replacement for Van Aanholt.

Teenager Tayo Adaramola has been promoted from the Under-23s in recent weeks as Mitchell’s understudy, making two appearances in the FA Cup since the turn of the year.

Mitchell has turned out 33 times for Palace this term, taking his total outings up to 57 for his boyhood club, and his fine form has been rewarded with a first call up to the England squad.
