Crooks hails Chelsea star as the 'most unselfish' player he's seen in a long time

Garth Crooks says Timo Werner is the ‘most unselfish’ player he’s seen in a long time after being impressed with his FA Cup performance.

Werner put in a man of the match display on Sunday to help Chelsea beat Crystal Palace 2-0 at Wembley and set up an FA Cup final meeting with Liverpool.

The German has struggled for regular form and goals this season and despite firing a blank at Wembley, former Tottenham striker Crooks was pleased with his effort for the team.

‘If ever you want to see how a team recovers from a midweek defeat in Europe, compose themselves and go on to win an FA Cup semi-final, then this was it,’ he told the BBC after naming him in his team of the week.

‘Granted, it does help when you have a galaxy of stars to chose from on the bench, but nevertheless this was an impressive display by Chelsea.

‘The star of the show against Palace was Werner and without doubt the most unselfish striker and willing runner I have seen in a long time.

‘Playing alongside the German must be a pleasure when he is in this form.

‘I thought when Werner first arrived at Chelsea he suffered from stage fright. Well if he did, he certainly doesn’t anymore.’

Werner and strike partner Romelu Lukaku have seen their game time fluctuate in recent months with Thomas Tuchel opting to play Kai Havertz up top.

However, both players have been given the nod to start their crunch clash with Arsenal this evening with Tuchel opting to rest Havertz.

‘You were asking so much about him so I finally put him in! Kai Havertz is overloaded so it was the moment to go with Romelu,’ Tuchel said.

‘He deserves to play first of all and Kai is a bit tired. Also a little bit that he had a good game in the first match.’
