Cristiano Ronaldo sends Wayne Rooney message after he criticised his Manchester United return

Manchester United forward Cristiano Ronaldo has sent Wayne Rooney a message following his controversial comments on Sky Sports' Monday Night Football.

Rooney was asked by presenter David Jones about whether Ronaldo's return to Old Trafford had been a success. The current Derby County boss gave a blunt assessment of his former teammate's performance so far.

"You'd have to say no (it hasn't worked), at the minute," Rooney said. "He's scored goals, important goals in the Champions League earlier on in the season, he scored the hat-trick against Tottenham.

"But I think if you're looking at the future of the club, you have to go with younger, hungry players to lift Manchester United over the next two or three years. Obviously Cristiano is getting on a bit and he's obviously not the player he was when he was in his 20s.

"That happens, that's football. He's a goal threat, the rest of the game, I think they need more younger and more hungry players."

It would appear Rooney's comments didn't go unnoticed in the Ronaldo household. On Wednesday, the Portuguese ace responded to a photo Rooney had posted on his Instagram of himself in the Monday Night Football studio alongside Jones and Jamie Carragher.

In a short message, Ronaldo commented: "Two jealous," accompanied by the eyes emoji. It is unclear if he was making any particular reference to Rooney's comments about his United return.
