Cristiano Ronaldo's mum couldn't hold back the emotion as her son scored for Portugal

Cristiano Ronaldo further extended his world record for the most international goals in the history of men’s football on Sunday night.

As the Manchester United superstar prepares for what must surely be his final World Cup, he reminded everyone that he means business with an excellent performance against Switzerland.

Portugal helped themselves to a comfortable 4-0 win at the Estádio José Alvalade with Ronaldo scoring twice between strikes from William Carvalho and Joao Cancelo.

His UEFA Nations League brace represented his 116th and 117th goals for the senior Portugal side, which pulls him even further clear of the former record holder Ali Daei.

And while some might say that the match was merely a glorified friendly, try telling that to Ronaldo’s mother, Maria Dolores dos Santos Aveiro, who was there to soak up the occasion.

Like any proud mum, Dolores has keenly watched her son’s professional career rising through the ranks at Sporting Lisbon to playing at his pomp for Manchester United and Real Madrid.

We can only imagine the sense of joy that she experiences from watching her son establish himself as one of the greatest sportspeople of all time having come from such humble beginnings.

And despite her son now having played at the highest level for two decades, Dolores has clearly never become numb or indifferent to the sight of Cristiano doing what he does best.

Besides, you only have to look at the way she reacted to Ronaldo’s goals against Switzerland to get a sense of the pride and delight she feels when watching him play the beautiful game.
