Cristiano Ronaldo's angry reaction to the referee after Man Utd beaten by Atletico Madrid

Cristiano Ronaldo was the orchestrator of a vital win for Manchester United on Sunday but he could not galvanise his side to Champions League glory on Tuesday night after his side were beaten 1-0 by Atletico Madrid.

With scores level at one goal apiece coming into the second leg, the tension at Old Trafford was palpable.

But in front of their home fans, Ralf Rangnick’s side yet again failed to deliver, despite controlling much of the possession in the first half.

Anthony Elanga was gifted a chance to break the deadlock early on, but it was Slovenian goalkeeper Jan Oblak who denied the midfielder using his face to deflect the shot away from his net.

As United couldn’t find an opening, Diego Simeone’s side grew into the match, with Joao Felix having a goal disallowed.

But disaster struck for the home team, just minutes before half-time.

Advancing in numbers, Atletico caught the United defence napping with Antoinne Griezman scoping down the right-hand flank before swinging a looping cross to Renan Lodi unmarked on the opposite side of the box.

With acres of space around him, Lodi punished the Red Devils for their lapse in concentration and headed home to score the only goal of the match that would qualify Atletico for the quarter-finals of the competition.

Controversially, some, including Ronaldo, might argue, that the goal should not have stood, with Elanga coming together with Reinildo Mandava in the build-up to the goal, allowing Atletico to mount the attack that led to their goal.

Ronaldo was quick to appeal the foul to the referee following the collision, running behind the official with his arms outstretched.
