Cristiano Ronaldo can now keep promise to Manchester United after transfer frustration

After a summer of speculation, Cristiano Ronaldo will stay at Manchester United for at least four more months after failing to manufacture a move away from Old Trafford.

The 37-year-old doesn’t make much of the club’s chances of earning silverware at United this season, but must now face the music as he gears up to play in the re-titled Europa League for the first time in his career.

The lack of offers from elsewhere will have come as an alarming wake-up call for a man who will go down as one of the greatest players of all time. Mentality has been a huge part of his consistency at the top level, and something that Erik ten Hag has reiterated will be important in United’s rebuild.

In January, Ronaldo pledged to help youngsters within the squad while reminding them that the drive must come “from inside”. "The mature players, the older players can always help the young players," he told Premier League Productions.

“We are here to help when they need my help, my support, my advice, I will be the number one to help but if you don't want my help, do your job, look for yourself and do your best to help the team.

"But, I can give you an example, if I give you advice, even if you are younger than me and if you don't implant that in a daily life it will be difficult.”

Ten Hag will hope Ronaldo sticks to his promise to divulge such advice despite an exit not being possible. The Dutchman will be aware that the superstar — who has been benched for United's previous three games before the Arsenal contest — will not be happy with limited game time. He must manage his ego to avoid another season riddled with unrest.
