Cricket SA's head-honcho clear on 'Baby AB's' path: 'He wants to play for SA'

Cricket South Africa's director of cricket Enoch Nkwe made it clear that Dewald Brevis's international cricket priorities remain with South Africa despite his early franchise T20 globetrotting.

Brevis, who broke Shikhar Dhawan's Under-19 Cricket World Cup run-scoring record at this year's event that was held in the West Indies, has yet to make his List A and First-Class debut for the Titans.

His 506 runs in the West Indies earned him an Indian Premier League ticket with the Mumbai Indians and he's currently with the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots in the Caribbean Premier League.

He's also part of the Mumbai Indians Cape Town side who will be taking part in the SA20 league early next year, indicating the value placed on him in the shortest format.

Nkwe says they still need to have a full debrief with the 19-year-old when he returns from the CPL, but acknowledges he's aware of the steps the youngster still needs to take.

"Domestic cricket is important and we'll always encourage a player to play domestic cricket," Nkwe said.

"He's been exposed to different forms of cricket and environments. He's played for the Titans earlier this year, so at least that process has started.

"His heart is here and he wants to play for South Africa. He understands that it may take a season or a couple of more months.

"We're not short-sighted and it's not like we're not aware of what is happening in his space. There's regular engagement.

"I can't wait for him to come back from the Caribbean Premier League so we can meet with him and see where he's at."
