Crews battle fire at site of former pub with area taped off near the scene

Firefighters are at the site of a former Greater Manchester pub after a huge blaze broke out overnight. Crews are in attendance on Tower Street, Heywood, this morning (September 7).

It is the site where The Heywood pub, formerly the Seven Stars, previously stood. The pub had been closed and was demolished last month.

An area near to the old pub has been taped off today while crews work at the scene. Greater Manchester Police is also in attendance.

Firefighters have been battling a fire at the site, involving timber, since around 5am. Images from the scene show smoke rising from the ground, where The Heywood had been reduced to rubble.

Crews are currently damping down the scene. Large flames were seen emerging from the scene at around 5.30am as crews battled to get the blaze under control.

A section of the road outside The Heywood has been closed off. A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: “Just before 5am on Thursday, September 7, three fire engines from Bury, Heywood and Rochdale stations were called to reports of a fire at a derelict building on Tower Street, Heywood.

“The fire involved a quantity of timber. Firefighters are using hose reels, jets and other specialist equipment to extinguish the fire.

“The incident is ongoing and GMFRS crews remain in attendance.” GMP has been approached for comment.
