Coventry City boss outlines transfer window priority in post-match update from Leamington

Coventry City boss Mark Robins has provided a transfer update as the manager continues to look to draft in new signings for the season ahead.

The Sky Blues manager has outlined his priority for the coming weeks as his squad lacks cover at the back – a situation not helped when they kicked off their pre-season friendly schedule at Leamington without Kyle McFadzean, who is ill.

City have so far missed out on two summer targets, both centre-backs, when Jake Clarke-Salter opted to join QPR and Manchester City teenager CJ Egan-Riley chose to sign for Burnley. As well as wanting to add both left and right-sided centre-backs, Robins also needs a left wing-back to fill Ian Maatsen's boots following his return to parent club Chelsea.

“We need to bolster the squad, there’s no doubt about it,” said Robins, speaking after his side's 3-1 win at non-league Leamington on Saturday, when second-half goals from Matty Godden (2) and Fabio Tavares secured victory after Dan Turner had given the hosts a second-minute lead.

“We have missed out on two that we were looking to bring in but that’s just part and parcel of a summer, and when you are trying to get better quality players in there is a lot of competition for those. But we will be moving forward on a couple in the next week to 10 days.

“One looks like it’s going to get done. I need to do another, and they are going to be defenders and that side of the pitch because if we end up with injuries or suspensions with the amount of games we are going to have to players, we need to be confident we have players there who can come in and do a job.

“We are just trying to be patient and make sure we wade through the detail to get the right ones in.”
