Courtney Sarault wins Olympic short track silver medal in women's 1,000 metres
Canadian short track speed skater Courtney Sarault won a silver medal in the women's 1,000 metre final on Monday at the Milano Cortina Olympic Games.
It marks the third Olympic medal won by the 25-year-old from Moncton, N.B., at these Games. Sarault claimed bronze in the women's 500m final and was a member of Canada's silver-medal winning mixed relay team.
Xandra Velzeboer of the Netherlands took gold while Kim Gilli of South Korea rounded out the podium with bronze.
Sarault was the lone Canadian in the five-skater final as teammates Florence Brunelle and Kim Boutin bowed out earlier in competition. Brunelle, of Trois-Rivieres, Que., was third in her semifinal heat and finished second in the 'B' final.
Boutin, of Sherbrooke, Que., did not advance to the semis after finishing third in her quarterfinal.
In other action on Monday, the Canadian men's 5,000m relay team of William Dandjinou, Steven Dubois, Felix Roussel, and Maxime Laoun won their semifinal heat to book a spot in Friday's medal final.
Dandjinou, Dubois, and Roussel also won their respective men's 500m heats on Monday to reach Wednesday's quarterfinals.
More to come.
