Couple who died in flooded car were due to celebrate their 54th anniversary

A couple who died after becoming trapped in their car in a flooded road at the weekend were due to celebrate their 54th wedding anniversary next week.

Elaine and Philip Marco died after becoming trapped in their black Mercedes in deep flood water on Queens Drive in Liverpool on Saturday (August 26). Emergency services were called to the scene at around 9.20pm.

The couple were rushed to hospital but were sadly pronounced dead. A file has been passed to the coroner who has asked Merseyside Police to further investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Since their passing, family and those who knew the couple have paid tribute to the ‘much loved’ parents and ‘dear friends’, the Liverpool Echo reports.

A statement from the couple's family said: "We are devastated and heartbroken by the sudden loss of Elaine and Philip Marco. They were much loved parents to four children and 10 grandchildren.

"The family are arriving overseas from America and Australia to mourn their loss. They were due to celebrate their 54th wedding anniversary next week and our only comfort is knowing that they were together to the very end."

A previous post from Philip to mark their 50th wedding anniversary said: "To my wonderful, caring, thoughtful, considerate Elaine, the best wife in the world. Wishing you a very happy 50th anniversary.

"Don’t know where all the years have gone but would not have wanted to spend it with anybody else. May we only have good health and happiness always with our fantastic family. With all my love forever. Philip."
