Couple on motorbike who were among six who died in horror crash are named

A couple who died in a horror crash in Yorkshire which also claimed the lives of four members of another family have been named.

Christopher Barton, 56, and Janine Barton, 48 were among the six people who lost their lives when the motorbike they were riding on collided with a Ford Focus between Wakefield and Barnsley shortly before 4pm on Sunday afternoon (July 21)

In a tribute released through West Yorkshire Police, they were described by their son as “a loving, caring mum and dad who always put me before everything else”. The couple had recently celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary, the force said.

Shane Roller, 33, his 30-year-old partner Shannen Morgan and their daughters Rubie and Lillie Morgan-Roller, aged nine and four, were also killed in the crash the A61. All six casualties were declared dead at the scene.

Mr Roller and Ms Morgan had another daughter, aged 11, who has been orphaned as a result of the tragedy. A GoFundMe crowdfunding appeal for her has already raised more than £280,000.

Specialist police family liaison officers are currently supporting both families.

Superintendent Alan Travis from Wakefield District Police said on Sunday: “This is an absolutely tragic incident which has resulted in the loss of six lives. Our thoughts go out to the families of those who have died who we are working with to provide support at this time.”

Anyone who witnessed the collision or who has dashcam footage who has not already been in contact with police is asked to contact West Yorkshire Police by calling 101 or via their website at quoting reference 1157 of 21/7.
