Council team seizes £13k of illegal cigarettes in raids on shops around Salford

A large haul of illegal cigarettes and tobacco have been seized in Salford as part of a crackdown on dodgy goods.

Over 20,000 illegal cigarettes and five kilos of illicit hand rolling tobacco worth up £13,000 were taken from six shops in Swinton and Eccles today (March 21). The operation was carried out Salford City Council's trading standards team who were supported by a police officer and two diligent sniffer dogs called Ricco and Bessie.

Along with the illegal items, £3,500 in cash was recovered which is now subject to proceeds of crime investigation. The move was part of Operation Cece, a national initiative in partnership with HMRC to tackle illegal tobacco.
