Corry Evans issues frank reaction after Sunderland’s 1-1 draw with Burton Albion

Sunderland salvaged a point late on against Burton Albion on Tuesday evening through Ross Stewart’s 93rd minute finish.

It is two points dropped though for the Black Cats as their slide down the table continues since Lee Johnson’s departure.

Alex Neil has picked up two points from three games in the dugout, which is a better return than Mike Dodds managed in the interim, but their position inside the play-off places looks in serious jeopardy due to the form of Sheffield Wednesday, Ipswich Town and Bolton Wanderers beneath them.

Corry Evans gave an honest assessment of the point against Burton and where it puts the Black Cats when he spoke to the club’s media team.

He said: “We managed to get a draw but it feels like a defeat.

“Realistically, the top two is a bit of a push now but we have to remain positive and try and pick up as many wins going forward to the end of the season, to finish as high as we can.

“It’s not down to lack of effort or trying, we’re all desperate to stop this rut, it’s just the decision making at times, quality in certain areas, giving away cheap goals and shooting ourselves in the foot at the minute.”

This is verging on an abject failure if Sunderland are not able to hold on for a top six place this season, a fifth consecutive season in League One is looming large on Wearside with Alex Neil facing an uphill task to win the supporters over in the remaining stretch.

The Verdict

Burton Albion are a decent side in League One and can be tough opposition at the best of times, but after picking up just one point from their previous five outings, it was a must win game at the Stadium of Light on Tuesday evening.
